CREW investigators are working with AIDS researchers at Northwestern University , the University of Minnesota , the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Michigan to create the first virtual Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) . The Great Lakes CFAR is led by Dr. Steve Wolinsky at Northwestern.

The Great Lakes CFAR is a demonstration project involving software recommendations and configuration, the codification of communications systems, and the training of technology support staff. Based on a needs analysis, the project is using off-the-shelf groupware to link up researchers within the Great Lakes CFAR.

Scientists have used the collaboration technologies provided by CREW to organize virtual lab meetings, virtual seminars, and teleoperation of instruments.
The Great Lakes CFAR is funded by the National Institutes of Health under grant 5 P30 CA79458.
