Elizabeth Yakel is an associate professor in the School of Information. She is a member of the Archives and Records Management specialization within the Master of Science in Information program. Before joining the SI faculty, she was an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Information Sciences. Prior to that, she worked in a variety of archival and records management settings.
Her research interests include use and user services for archival materials, particularly focusing on the digital realm, and the development of recordkeeping systems. She is working on several research projects, including "Developing Standardized Metrics: Towards Understanding the Impact of College and University Archives and Special Collections on Scholarship, Teaching, and Learning," funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Working with researchers from the University of Toronto and the University of North Carolina, this research project will develop validated data collection tools for archives and special collections to enable repositories to better evaluate use and user services. The goal is to create a robust data set for administrative and professional benchmarking as well as for research.
Another research project in which she is involved is "Health Information Technology to Support Safe Nursing Care." This project examines the recordkeeping practices of nurses and provides a technological intervention to support nursing documentation and reporting.
Yakel has published widely on many aspects of archival use and user services and recordkeeping systems in major archival journals, including American Archivist, Archivaria, and Archival Science. She is currently co-editing an upcoming book, User Based Evaluation & Metrics in Archives: Current Practice and Future Prospects, which will be published in 2006 by the Society of American Archivists. She was a contributor to Vatican Archives: An Inventory and Guide to Historical Documentation of the Holy See, New York: Oxford University Press, 1998.
